Female Sexual Signaling in a Capital Breeder, the European Glow-Worm Lampyris noctiluca

چکیده

Abstract Theory predicts that because costs constrain female sexual signaling, females are expected to have a low signaling effort is increased with passing time until mating secured. This pattern of result from balancing the associated higher than optimal and those increase likelihood delayed mating. We tested whether this prediction applies in common glow-worm Lampyris noctiluca (Coleoptera, Lampyridae), capital breeding species which glow at night attract males. Contrary predictions, we found duration significantly decreased time. Moreover, when experienced multiple light/dark cycles within 24 h, both intensity decreased. These results imply attempt signal as much possible first, decrease likely being due resource depletion. Because greater should mate soon thus always invest into possible.

Colour vision in the glow-worm Lampyris noctiluca (L.) (Coleoptera: Lampyridae): evidence for a green-blue chromatic mechanism.

Male glow-worms Lampyris noctiluca find their bioluminescent mates at night by phototaxis. There is good evidence that location of mates by lampyrid beetles is achieved by a single spectral class of photoreceptor, whose spectral sensitivity is tuned to the bioluminescent spectrum emitted by conspecifics, and is achromatic. We ask whether glow-worm phototaxis involves interactions between two sp...

An enzyme histochemical and electron microscopical study of the light organ of the glow-worm, Lampyris noctiluca.

The light organs of female specimens of the glow-worm Lampyris noctiluca were investigated by enzyme histochemical tests, lipid stains, and electron microscopy. Differences, both histochemical and in fine structure, were found between the cells of the photocyte and reflector layers. The photocytes contained a vesiculated reticulum, photocyte granules, amorphous granules, and numerous mitochondr...

I'm sexy and I glow it: female ornamentation in a nocturnal capital breeder.

In many species, males rely on sexual ornaments to attract females. Females, by contrast, rarely produce ornaments. The glow-worm (Lampyris noctiluca) is an exception where wingless females glow to attract males that fly in search of females. However, little is known about the factors that promote the evolution of female ornaments in a sexual selection context. Here, we investigated if the fema...

Case of unilateral wing formation in the female of the glowworm Lampyris noctiluca.

On July 27, 1999, the first author found a unilaterally winged adult glowworm in a park in the city of Mainz. Except for the wings on the left side, the specimen exhibited female characteristics that extended to external sexual appendages, the lantern and the gonads. The internal organization showed some remarkable differences between right (wingless) and left (winged) side. The right ovary con...

The timing of male reproductive effort relative to female ovulation in a capital breeder.

1. In large herbivores, the timing of breeding is important for females to hit peak plant protein levels. For males, the timing of reproductive effort is important to maximize the number of females they can mate during autumn rut in competition with other males. The latter depends on when most females are ovulating, but also on how other males with a different competitive ability are timing use...
